A basement remodel is a different job from finishing one for the first time, because there's already a layout, wiring and finishes in place, some of it done well, some of it done by a previous owner without a permit. The first walk through is about figuring out what's actually behind the existing drywall before deciding what changes.
Older finished basements often have wiring that was never inspected, low grade paneling instead of drywall, or a layout built around a single television rather than how the space actually gets used now. Once we open things up, we sometimes find outdated wiring that needs to be brought up to current code, or framing that was never sealed against moisture in the first place.
Most basement remodels involve reworking the layout, adding a bathroom or wet bar where there wasn't one, and swapping out dated lighting for something that actually lights the room. Ask what's behind the walls before you commit to a layout, and ask whether the electrical panel has room for the new circuits a bathroom or bar will need, that's often the deciding factor in what's possible.
