The Town of Brookeville was laid out in the 1790s and is one of the smallest incorporated towns in Montgomery County. President James Madison stayed there in August 1814 after the British burned Washington, and the historic district along Market Street still has houses from the 1800s.
Outside the town limits, the Brookeville mailing area spreads across larger country lots toward Olney and Sandy Spring, with farmhouses, custom homes and newer estate style houses on acreage. Older houses here come with plaster walls, uneven floors and small original bathrooms, and changes inside a historic house take more care than a standard renovation. Newer homes on bigger lots tend to have large unfinished basements and kitchens that are ready for a full update.
